New York’s Hot Spots & Shops

A cityscape at dusk with tall buildings illuminated by lights from within. The sky transitions from day to night

New York City isn’t just a destination. It’s got an aura of its own that surges with energy and excitement.

And if you’re looking for a gateway to the city, look to Thompson Central Park New York, which is just steps away from the best of Manhattan. The 56th Street hotel on the south edge of Central Park offers great access to the shows at Carnegie Hall, the art at MoMA, and many fine dining destinations.*

Start your day with a stroll for coffee that could easily transition into a morning lost in the city’s ever-evolving art scene. An afternoon of shopping could transform into an unforgettable experience that takes you everywhere but Fifth Avenue. And in your search for the perfect cocktail, you might just realize that the best cocktails are either served after three knocks or sipped at 300 feet above street level with 360-degree views.

Morning Coffee

The right cup can set the tone for the day. Unique options are available everywhere you look, but some take coffee to the next level.

  • Zibetto Espresso Bar is a standing-only hotspot located at 1385 6th Avenue. They serve authentic Italian coffee and quick (but delicious) bites.
  • Tartinery is a casual French cafe bar offering craft coffee along with wholesome breads and delicious baked goods. Find it at 645 5th Avenue.

Noteworthy in SoHo and Williamsburg

  • If you don’t mind walking a bit, there’s Café Leon Dore. Located at 214 Mulberry Street in SoHo, they specialize in Greek-influenced coffee with a high-fashion twist — it’s housed inside the cult-favorite streetwear brand, Aimé Leon Dore.
  • Lush greenery and natural light fill the space at Devoción at 25 East 20th Street, making it the ultimate escape for coffee lovers who need a breath of fresh air and a break from the concrete jungle.

Fashion and Design

Turn shopping into an experience when you leave Fifth Avenue behind in search of more interesting boutiques featuring curated fashions and home designs.

  • The Shops at Columbus Circle is an indoor shopping experience featuring more than 50 retail shops and boutiques. It also has over a dozen restaurants and bars, including two with Michelin stars, a hotel, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and more. Located at 10 Columbus Circle.
  • Bloomingdale’s Outlet at 2085 Broadway is the brand’s flagship location with multiple floors and a restaurant. Shop for great deals on the brands and quality you’re familiar with and enjoy clearance and off-price savings.

Noteworthy in Murray Hill and SoHo

  • Dover Street Market can be found at 160 Lexington Avenue in Murray Hill. This is something to see even if fashion isn’t your cup of tea. Edgy style by avant-garde designers is found throughout its seven floors, shining the spotlight on apparel as an art form.
  • Roman and Williams Guild at 53 Howard Street in SoHo is so much more than a place to browse. It’s an experience; a curated selection for the home that crosses boundaries into the art world. It emphasizes maintenance and repairability, so you can expect heirloom quality that lasts for generations. There’s also a gallery, restaurant, library, flower shop, and more.

Art, Culture, and Rooftop Views

After you’ve finished experiencing the many shopping opportunities, slow things down for a bit of contemplation, observation, and libation on the East and West Sides.

  • The Frick Collection is a museum and research center on East 71st Street. Its original collection was donated by Henry Clay Frick, along with his residence — the mansion that houses the museum. The Frick Collection includes one of the best art research libraries in the world, founded by Frick’s daughter, Helen Clay Frick. Now, after having been closed for five years for renovations, the building is reopened as of April 2025. Visitors can expect a modernized building and services that appeal to all ages.
  • The Met, technically known as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a must — even if you’ve been there before. Beyond the artistic and historical levels of enrichment, The Met also allows for social enrichment. An example of this a current exhibition called Jesse Krimes: Corrections. The eponymous work was created by Krimes over the course of his six-year incarceration. By using nontraditional prison-issued materials, he was able to transfer images from newspapers onto tiny bars of soap. Images included celebrities, politicians, and alleged criminals.
  • On the West Side, you’ll find The High Line. Known for its great people-watching, it also features multiple gardens and art displays by modern artists. It has an interesting history as a freight line until it was abandoned and decommissioned. When wild plants were discovered growing along this 15-mile track, a nonprofit conservancy was founded to advocate for its preservation and use as a public space.
  • After a day of contemplation and observation, it’s time for libation. Darling Rooftop serves cocktails from the 47th floor, overlooking Central Park. Enjoy drinks, entertainment, and incredible views. Plus, it’s just a five-minute walk to Thompson Central Park New York, where you can end your day on a high note.

Midnight Bites and Secret Sips

Dive into New York’s legendary dining and nightlife with dinner and a visit to a speakeasy. As these locations are further out; each is within a half-hour with a car service, but are well worth your time.

  • Please Don’t Tell in the East Village is a Prohibition-style speakeasy experience that can only be accessed by entering through a phone booth inside Crif Dogs hotdog shop.
  • Attaboy is a bar on the Lower East Side. You won’t see a sign, they don’t take reservations, and no menus are available. Despite all of that, Attaboy took the #1 spot on the 2022 list of North America’s 50 Best Bars by World’s 50 Best Bars
  • In the West Village, you’ll find Employees Only, a speakeasy with at cool atmosphere, refreshing cocktails, and delicious food. Those in the know are keen on the complimentary late-night snack that’s offered right before closing: Sober Up Soup.

Late-Night Noshing

Deciding where to eat in New York will never be easy. However, the options are narrowed down when you’re looking to wind down with a late-night snack.

  • Superiority Burger in East Village is a tiny plant-based burger joint that draws crowds. Even meat-lovers swear by it.
  • Katz’s Delicatessen on the Lower East Side is the place to go for a classic pastrami sandwich. But there’s so much more and it’s open 24 hours for the weekend crowd.
  • Double Chicken Please is a distinctive bar and restaurant that’s perfect for late nights. Interestingly, it started as a food truck that has grown into a unique option. Imagine cocktails inspired by cartoons. Drinks inspired by food. And of course, actual food — like chicken, plant-based sandwiches, and Bolognese grilled cheese.
